A discussion focused on how Lean Manufacturing strategies were implemented in 50 companies within a multi-state region to address workforce and operational challenges.

Kristin Kautz, Grant Administrator for the Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership,  discusses how Lean Manufacturing strategies were implemented in 50 companies within a multi-state region to address workforce and operational challenges. Because today’s workforce is increasingly multi-cultural and limited English proficient, there is a broader need to bridge both cultural and language gaps in the workplace. To do this, the Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership implemented a three piece curricula that aims to improve the language skills of limited English speakers, prepare native foreign workers to help ESL co-workers overcome communication barriers, and collaboratively train employees how to utilize Lean Manufacturing principles. The implementation of these principles has positively impacted the bottom line of the 50 companies, and has increased the number of jobs created and jobs retained.
